What’s all the BUZZZZZ about?
Resurrecting a legendary performance name that had been dormant since 2009, the new 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 Super Bee has its sights set on writing its own distinguished chapter in a storied history that began back in 1968. This highest-profile version of Dodge’s Hemi-powered four-door fastback arrived in Los Angeles as a limited-edition offering, available in either Stinger Yellow or Pitch Black. As in the past, this current-gen iteration also boasts a dedicated graphics package along with functional and cosmetic upgrades — including the classic Super Bee stripes and logos along with a rear decklid spoiler.
Like the basic 2012 Charger SRT8, this new Super Bee gets its considerable sting from an upsized 6.4-liter Hemi V8 that cranks out 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque – up from the 425/420 figures of the 6.1-liter used in 2011. In addition to extra muscle, the changeover brings a new active valve exhaust system that lets the standard cylinder-deactivating Fuel Saver Technology function over an even wider a wider rev range. Beyond stepping up power and efficiency, it adds a more aggressive exhaust note during hard acceleration. Mated to the standard five-speed automatic transmission, it can send this higher-profile Charger from 0-60 mph in less than five seconds. Also in the Super Bee’s hive are a full SRT suspension and primo Brembo brakes as well as unique 20-inch cast-alloy wheels that can be wrapped in available Goodyear Eagle RS-A 2 all-season tires or ultra-performance Goodyear F1 Supercar rubber.
Inside the cabin of this ultra SRT8 variant, the Super Bee motif takes the form of performance buckets covered in exclusive Z-stripe cloth with yellow and silver striping set off by silver accent stitching. A Super Bee logo is embroidered on each front headrest and also appears a special dash plaque as well as on the car’s Electronic Vehicle Information Center at start up.
Dodge will only build a maximum of 1,000 of these 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 Super Bee models, 500 of each color.
Recalling the original 1970 concept vehicle of the same name, the 2012 Dodge Challenger SRT8 Yellow Jacket is a limited-edition exercise spun from the baseline Challenger SRT8 model. Set for its full reveal in Los Angeles, this appropriately named super coupe boasts a unique Stinger Yellow exterior set off with black accent elements. According to Ralph Gilles, President and CEO – SRT Brand and Motorsports, that high-profile combo “speaks directly to the performance enthusiast who appreciates a memorable and collectible color that helps deliver even more excitement and exclusivity.”
Motivation for the Yellow Jacket comes from the same 6.4-liter Hemi V8 in the baseline Challenger SRT8, which sends its 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels by either a standard Tremec six-speed manual transmission or an optional five-speed automatic that also brings steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. While either engine/trans pairing also includes a limited-slip differential and is capable of sending this striking coupe from 0-60 mph in less than five seconds, opting for the autoshifter also brings Fuel Saver Technology that can deactivate four cylinders during low-stress driving.
To sharpen its reflexes, the 2012 Yellow Jacket also benefits from a new SRT-spec adaptive damping suspension. Specifically tuned for the Challenger SRT8 392 and offering driver-selectable “Auto” and “Sport” modes, Dodge says it gives the car the quickest turn-in and most agile handling of any SRT product currently on the market. To further heighten its fun-to-drive index, the package also includes a three-mode electronic stability control system, big Brembo brakes and lightweight 20-inch forged alloy wheels wrapped on Goodyear Eagle RSA or optional Goodyear F1 Supercar tires.
Inside, the Yellow Jacket features standard leather seats with a contrasting Stinger Yellow trim band, silver accent stitching and embroidered Yellow Jacket logos.
Safford Chrysler Jeep Dodge of Fredericksburg will begin taking orders for both the Charger Super Bee and the Challenger Yellow Jacket next month and deliveries are slated to begin during the first quarter of 2012.
