What’s in a Name?

One of the best episodes of The Simpsons is 1991’s Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?, in which Homer discovers that his long-lost brother, Herb Powell, is the chief executive of a car company.

The Homer

At one point in the episode, Powell (voiced by Danny DeVito) berates his staff for suggesting that the company name a new car “the Persephone,” after the Greek goddess of reviving crops who was condemned to the underworld after eating pomegranate seeds.

“People don’t want cars named after hungry old Greek broads!” Powell yells. “They want names like ‘Mustang’ and ‘Cheetah’–vicious animal names.”

While Ford Motor’s Mustang has one of the best names in automotive history, some marketers who tried to make their cars more high-culture than they actually were, could have used a scolding from a guy like Powell. Did any of Chrysler‘s or General Motors’  customers really believe that driving a Dodge Diplomat would make them more ambassadorial or a Pontiac Parisienne would make them French?

Ever wish you had the awesome job of coming up with such distinct names for all of our vehicles? Are you one of those vehicle enthusiasts who names their car and says “Good Morning” to it when you get in each morning? Do you ever catch yourself thinking, I wish I had a vehicle named _____?

Your Virginia Jeep Dealer catches an appearance of the Electric Jeep Grand Cherokee

Electric Jeep Grand Cherokee

You’ll find no shortage of love for the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee here at Safford Chrysler Jeep Dodge in Fredericksburg. The full-size SUV from Jeep is iconic in its performance, design, and time-tested value, so it’s easy to say that we’re skeptical of how it could get any better.

Truth be told, we’ve never been so happy to be wrong. Recently, Amp, a company based in Ohio, showed off a variant of the Jeep Grand Cherokee that’s 100-percent electric. We’ve heard of smaller electric cars and even mid-size ones; but a full-size off-road-ready SUV? Now we’re talking!

The impressive electric Jeep made an appearance at the 2012 North American International Auto Show, and to say that attendees were impressed with it would be a severe understatement. The Jeep Grand Cherokee Electric is powered by a 37.6 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion phosphate battery pack, energizing two Remy AC motors. But how does it perform? The ride is smooth, has enough pickup to go from 0-60 in under ten seconds, and it features an impressive driving range of 80-100 miles per charge. As of right now, the vehicle is only a front-wheel drive model, but Jeep reps have already said that a four-wheel drive variant is in the works. AMP announced an introductory price starting at $57,400 for the all-electric Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Here’s a look at the Electric Jeep Grand Cherokee test drive:

Your Virginia Jeep Dealer presents Motor Trend’s Review of the 2012 Jeep Wrangler

Crossing the Rubicon: Iconic Vehicle takes on an Iconic Trail

2012 jeep wrangler sahara and 2012 jeep wrangler rubicon

Just out for a drive....

What is the best way to test an off-roading machine?  The Rubicon Trail located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California.  This is where Motor Trend decided to test the 2012 Jeep Wrangler.  Despite difficult terrain, steep upgrades,  and deep water, the new Jeep was able to conquer the trail.  Allyson Harwood reports from Motor Trend:

You can’t tell by looking at it, but the Jeep Wrangler has undergone a transformation. The iconic shape remains — seven-slot grille, round headlights, short wheelbase, soft or hard top — but Jeep has made huge improvements to the off-roader for 2012. Jeep invited us to drive the 2012 Wrangler on the Rubicon, one of the hardest 4×4 trails around, used almost exclusively by modified vehicles. We also got to drive on the two-lane asphalt roads that wind around Lake Tahoe.

2012 Jeep wrangler sahara and 2012 jeep wrangler rubiconConsider this the second part of a major overhaul to the Wrangler and four-door Wrangler Unlimited. Part one happened for the 2011 model year, when the JK (the current generation’s code name) received a new interior, plus, on the Sahara, a body-color hard top and fender flares. The hard top is of the same composite material as it was before, but what sounds like a minor change actually has a major effect on the Wrangler’s appearance. In addition, the rear windows are larger as of 2011, improving visibility. For 2012, the body-color hard top and fender flares are optional on the Rubicon, too.

Inside, welcome 2011 revisions include the use of higher-quality materials; the redesigned center stack; an all-new instrument panel; and strategically applied sound insulation that makes this the quietest Wrangler ever. Some creature comforts never seen here before — seat heaters, power heated mirrors, and redundant steering wheel controls — make this the most refined Wrangler cabin ever.
